KSL Fails at Reporting
KSL recently ran this news story:

Now a bunch of bloggers are making their blogs private because they don’t want crazy people harrassing them.
KSL has completely failed at reporting.
They have no facts, no sustainable statistics, and out of the estimated 100 million blogs in the world at the moment they presented two for consideration when it comes to whacked out and crazed situations. The first incident was so vague that you can’t even tell what is going on and the second was perpetrated by a family member!
Shame on KSL for playing on the fear of the masses just to run a story.

Yeah, I’ve seen this clip posted on several blogs that are going private because of it. That’s obviously up to them if they want to go private, but it’s unfortunate that KSL decided to play on the fears of people, like you said. I was reading a blog the other day that belongs to a woman who posts pictures of her children occasionally and has a few thousand visitors a day. One lady asked why she didn’t go private because she was posting pictures of her kids on her blog, and the blogger replied back “because I refuse to live my life in fear.” I thought that was profound.
I also found it ironic that here these newscasters were telling people to not post pictures of themselves and their families on their blogs, but they were on TV, using their real names, where several thousand people see and hear them every day. They don’t feel threatened being on the news every day, but they were trying to make us feel threatened by posting a picture here and there on our blogs? Like you said, with over 100 million blogs in existence, they were only able to gather up 2 examples of anything questionable happening from someone seeing pictures on blogs. That’s pretty pathetic, especially considering one instance was a family member who easily could have obtained the pictures in an email or from the house of the family member who posted the pictures. Oh well.
I know people who are privatizing their blogs because of this article are doing so because they want to protect their families, which is commendable. It’s just too bad that the media tries to play on people’s emotions and make them fearful of things that sometimes really aren’t big threats in the grand scheme of things.
I thought the same thing. Glad you concurred.
Thanks Kory, I will have Dave read this.
My fears are put to rest. They really shouldn’t do articles like that. As if, as parents, we don’t already have enough to worry about! thanks Kory
Seriously. If I read about one more person who went private because of this news piece I am going to scream! But I am going to puke if someone tells me that they go private so someone isn’t looking at pictures of their kid. Really? Cause lots of people see my kid at the grocery store. The difference would be…what? If people want to go private or are private, I am completely fine with it - but if they do it for the sole purpose of watching the story about someone who had a family harrass them via their blog, then maybe I would like to have a talk with them. I am so glad I am not the only one who feels this way!
